KIRTZ DOWNS 27 TO LEAD WARRIORS PAST ATLANTA IN THE TITLE GAME, 95-84...

Cartersville, GA (Dec. 30, 2007) - The Cartersville-Baseline Warriors concluded an impressive weekend of play with a 95-84 win over a very tough Atlanta Speedboys club on Sunday afternoon at JH Morgan Gym to capture the Bartow County Bank Winter Cup.

Atlanta jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on a trey by DeWayne Swayne and two buckets by DeCourney McGowan. Baseline finally got on track with an Adrien Borders (6'0''-G-83) triple, followed by a freethrow and bucket by Chris Jones (6'6''-F-82). The Speedboys would go cold and Baseline took advantage, scoring nine more unanswered points to pull out to a 15-7 spread. Antonio Cook (6'6''-G/F-80) drained three consecutive threes in the run. DeJuan Clark broke Atlanta's drought with a drive down the right side of the lane. He drew the foul and hit the freethrow. Marcus Henderson (6'8''-F-79) hit two freethrows to push Baseline's lead to 17-10. The Speedboys would remain cold for a three-minute stretch, but the Warriors were not able to capitalize, going equally as cold. The scoring started clicking for both teams again. Baseline worked out to a 34-23 lead when Swayne drilled a three and drew a foul. After connecting on the rare 4-point play, Atlanta had cut Baseline's lead to seven, at 34-27. Later, Baseline's defense would stiffen in the latter minutes of the half, while Chris Jones would benefit tallying eight consective points. Chris Morgan's dribble-drive put the Warriors up 52-38 heading into the break.

In the second half, Baseline pushed its lead to 57-41, after another Cook three. But, DeJuan Clark led a 12-0 run, that brought the Speedboys to within 57-53. Clark scored 10 points in the run, including three long-range bombs. Rodney Kirtz (6'3''-G-79) re-entered and promptly drilled two consective tri-fectas to push Baseline's lead back out to double-digits. Kirtz would essentially take control of Baseline's offense from this point. Baseline would re-build its lead to a dozen, after Joe Hamilton (6'6''-F-79) flushed an alley, with an assist from Borders. A Kirtz three gave the Warriors their largest lead at 76-59. But, Atlanta was not going to go a way that easy, as Swayne completed another old-fashioned And-1 play. Then, Shawn Cox executed a great dribble drive, followed by a pull up jumper in the lane. Cox would score score the next five Speedboys' points. Baseline was able to counter with another Hamilton slam and Kirtz penetration bucket to stay ahead 82-73, but the momentum had clearly swung Atlanta's way. Clark drove the lane for another Speedboy's bucket, to get it down to seven. Then, Baseline scored four straight on Hamilton freethrows and a Chris Jones bucket off the glass, to go back up 86-75, with 2:30 left. After a Speedboy miscue, Baseline tried to utilize some clock, but turned it back over. Clark punched home a transition basket, making it 86-77. On the ensuing possession, Kirtz drove from the right wing into the lane, rose over two defenders and jammed the ball home while drawing the foul. He hit the freethrow, seemingly breaking Atlanta's back, while increasing Baseline's lead back to 89-77. But, again, Atlanta would not give up. McGowan immediately drew a foul, hitting both at the line. Baseline would cough the ball up again, with Swain capitalizing with a lay-in. Another Warrior bungle gave the Speedboys the ball back. Clark drilled a three in the corner and suddenly, Baseline's lead had been reduced to 89-84 with .28 seconds left. After a timeout, Baseline threw the inbounds to Kirtz. After being fouled, he sank the two at the charity stripe. The Speedboys would quickly miss, with the rebound going to Kirtz, who was fouled immediately. He sank the two freethrows again. On their next possession, Atlanta would lose the ball out of bounds with only eight seconds showing. Again, the inbounds went to Kirtz. He put Atlanta away with his fifth and sixth consecutive free throws.

Clark led Atlanta with 23 points, while Swayne had 22, McGowan 16, Cox 11, Billy Brewster eight and Keith Payne four.

For the Warriors, who are now 10-1 on the season, Kirtz led all scorers with 27, with 20 of those coming over the final 12 minutes of the game. Jones finished with 20, Cook 17, Hamilton 16, Mike Reynolds six, Henderson four, Borders three and Chris Morgan two.

BROWN DOWNS 23, TO HELP MACON CLAIM 3RD IN THE BCB WINTER CUP...

In the consolation game, Team Macon recovered from a double-digit deficit to beat Marietta Outlaw 78-72. Marietta lead by as many as 28-17 in the first half, before Macon began to take advantage of their speed to close to within 35-30 at the half. Macon, who had changed the momentum in the first half, continued to play well into the second half behind the scoring on John Brown and Juwan Brantley. Brown's jumper with 6:40 remaining, put Macon up 67-59. Marietta made it interesting late after a Saye McClesky lay-in cut Macon's lead to 73-70. After trading buckets, Marietta was forced to foul, but Jamal Vaughn, Darian Dellner and Lorin Lewis would combine 5-6 at the line for Macon in the final minute to ice the victory.

The Results from Day One:

Cartersville-Baseline Warriors 96, Team Macon 76...
The Warriors went on a big run to break a close game open, taking a 50-30 lead into the half. Adrien Borders and Chris Morgan took advantage of a much slower Macon line-up, streaking for numerous transition buckets. Behind the perimeter shooting of John Brown, Macon managed to work back into to the game trimming the Baseline lead to eight at the mid-way point of the second half. But, the Warriors re-established control as Mike Reynolds heated up down the stretch and Chris Jones found seams in the middle repeatedly. Brown led Macon with 27 points, while Damion Perkins downed 24, Lorian Lewis 10, Davion Dellner 7, Larry Johnson 3 and Jamal Vaughn 2. For Baseline Morgan finished with 25, Chris Jones 23, Borders 17, Reynolds 12, Scott Windom 10, Bobby Rouse 4 and Antonio Cook 2.

Baseline... 50-46 -- 96
Macon...... 30-46 -- 76

Atlanta Speedboys 104, Marietta Outlaw 96...
The Speedboys jumped out early on a cold-shooting Marietta squad, building a 21-point lead at one point, as Shawn Cox and Billy Brewster combined for 18 points in the early going. The Speedboys led 35-14, before the Outlaw began to get cranked up, as Derrick Owens hit a couple of treys. Marietta eventually clipped their deficit down to eight. DeJuan Clark led a spurt in the latter minutes of the first half to go in to the break up 55-41. In the second half, the Speedboys maintained their spread through out most of the half. Marietta made their run late though to make the game interesting. Jeff Boyd drilled consecutive threes and Gene Moss, who tallied all of his 14 in the second half, helped the Outlaw comeback to cut Atlanta's lead to 89-86 with 2:55 remaining. But, Xavier Morton stuck to big buckets, followed by another Cox triple, to put the game away for the Speedboys. Owens led Marietta with 21, while Boyd had 18, Moss 14, Saye McClesky 12, Tim Moss 10, Duvall McClesky 9 and Robert Bringe 9. For Atlanta, Cox led all scorers with 26, while Morton and Clark each had 18, DeCourney McGowan 14, Brewster 10, DeWayne Swain 10, Fred Odoms and Marcus Byams 3 each and Keith Payne 2.

Marietta... 41-55 -- 96

Atlanta Speedboys 61, Team Macon 53...
Team Macon fell down by 10 in the opening moments of the game, and though they flirted with several comeback efforts, could never get over the hump. The Speedboys, played through fatigue, but managed to hold on for the win. Atlanta led 38-24 at half-time. Macon made a solid run late in the game to get to within six. However, Atlanta put the ball in the hands of Cox and Clark, who did a great job of playing keep away, while McGowan knocked down several crucial mid-range jumpers, to keep the upset minded Macon squad at bey. Jamon Perkins led Macon with 16, as Davion Dellner had 14, John Brown 9, Lorian Lewis 4, Rufus Talmadge 4, Jamal Vaughn 3 and JaQuan Oneal 3. For Atlanta, Cox again led the way with 12, as McGowan had 10, Swain 9, Payne 8, Clark 7, Odoms 6 and Brewster 4.

Atlanta.... 38-23 -- 61
Macon.... 24-29 -- 53

Cartersville-Baseline Warriors 93, Marietta Outlaw 71...
The night-cap for day one, presented the deciding factor in who would advance to the Finals. Marietta needed to win to give them hope of coming back on Sunday to get a second victory over Macon. That scenario would propel them to the Finals. While Baseline, needed to win to move directly into the finals against Atlanta, who had already vaulted themselves into the title game. A Baseline loss would've set up a "must-win" game against the very same Atlanta squad in their third game of the round-robin. The two teams see-sawed throughout the first half, with both taking four point leads at one time. Gene Moss' basket at the buzzer gave Marietta a 36-35 lead at the half. The second half initially saw both teams contintue to trade baskets. Marcus Henderson, who had been held score-less on the day, began to get involved by hitting a baseline jumper, followed by hitting two freethrows. Morgan broke free for a lay-in down the middle, to give Baseline its largest lead at six. Marietta countered with post-up buckets by Gene Moss. The Warriors defense stiffened, causing the Outlaw to go cold from the field. Baseline stretched its lead to 10 on an Antonio Cook tri-fecta. Baseline then went into a spread offense, which actually opened up the offense for penetration against a slower Outlaw team. Baseline's offense exploded to a 12-0 run, behind Cook, Chris Jones and Mike Reynolds, who each got repeated buckets down the stretch. Bobby Rouse's put back with 4:40 left gave the Warriors its largest spread - a surprising 81-56 lead. Dee Henderson, on loan from the Summer Hill Blue Devils because of a reduced Baseline roster for the day, entered the game and capped off the scoring with a driving bucket, a freethrow and a long trey, to maintain the Warriors lead at 93-68. Jeff Boyd's drained a meaningless three for Marietta with a few seconds left to tally the final total. A loud and boisterous Boyd led Marietta with 17, while Gene Moss had 16, Saye McClesky 11, Duvall McClesky 8, Tim Moss 7, Robert Bringe 6, and and a cold Derrick Owen 2. Baseline got balance scoring from Chris Morgan with 19, Chris Jones and Cook 16 each, Reynolds 15, Adrien Borders 10, Marcus and Dee Henderson 6 each, and Rouse 5.

Marietta.... 36-35 -- 71
Baseline... 35-58 -- 93

Schedule for Day Two:

4:00pm - Championship Game... Atlanta Speedboys (2-0) vs. Cartersville-Baseline Warriors (2-0)
5:00pm - Consolation Game... Team Macon (0-2) vs. Marietta Outlaw (0-2)

The original scheduled pitted Atlanta and Baseline in their respective 3rd games of the round-robin. Since both qualified for the Final Game by going 2-0 agains the other competition, it was agreed playing twice would only serve to create a sloppy Title game. Therefore, the scheduled 4:00pm game will serve as the Championship Game. With both, Macon and Marietta, going into Sunday with 0-2 records in the round robin against the other competition, their scheduled 5:00pm match-up will be considered as the 3rd Place Consolation contest.
