Chattahoochee Tech takes Summer Hill Cup, off to 6-0 start... With a 107-73 win over the Summer Hill Blue Devils in the Summer Hill Cup finals on Sunday afternoon at JH Morgan Gym, the Chattahoochee Technical College men's basketball team is off to an impressive 6-0 start. On Saturday, in round-robin play, Summer Hill took CTC to the brink, forcing overtime before falling 94-89 in the extra period. The Devils had to win over the Republic of Estonia Saturday evening, to get to the finals, winning 102-57 to get another chance at Chattahoochee. But, in the finals, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening minutes. Summer Hill had a hard time finding the basket, and fell further behind as Courtney George downed two threes and short jumper and a reverse lay-in in leading CTC to a 20-2 spread. The Blue Devils' energetic Darrell Waters picked up his second foul, making matters worse as he had to go to the bench. After falling down by as many as 24, Waters returned and coupled with Dee Henderson's slashing offensive moves began chipping away at the CTC lead. The Duo combined for the final seven points of the half, as SH trimmed their deficit to 43-30 going into the locker room. CTC scored got quick buckets to start the second stanza, pushing its lead back to 17, but the Devils wouldn't go away. Jeff Hawkins got free for a bucket in the lane, followed by a jumper by Kevin Green to trigger a 13-2 run for Summer Hill. Dexter Shaw hit a long-range shot and Hendersons second 3-point bomb trimmed the Golden Eagles lead to 47-43. The two teams traded baskets in the middle minutes of the half, as Stephan Padmore and Robert Broderick got easy buckets in the paint for CTC and Hawkins worked the middle for the Devils, while Mike Reynolds got hot for several mid-range shots for SH. Then the bottom fell out for the Devils, as Waters fouled out and Henderson was tossed from the game after his second technical foul. With an alread depleted roster, due to injuries to two players and another attending a family emergency, Summer Hill was left slim in the middle. Broderick had field day down the stretch, while Joshua Brown came off the bench with solid point production for the Eagles, breaking the Devils spirit. Summer Hill was led by Reynolds who had 18 points, while Hawkins got 17, Henderson 15 and Waters nine. For Chattahoochee Tech, who moved to 6-0 on the early season, Broderick's game-high 24 led a balanced attack which saw 14 players score. Brown and George both had 14, while Richard Davis had 11, Ishmael John and Padmore eight each, Darryl Williams seven, Schaun Cade five, Cameron Robinson and Mark Christmas four each, Same Stovall and Jullian Butts three apeice and Julian Bratton two. To get to the finals, Chattahoochee went 3-0 in round-robin action, defeating the Republic of Estonia on Friday afternoon 120-62, then had the hard-fought over time game over Summer Hill, followed by a relatively easy 140-82 victory over Oklahoma Prep. Summer Hill went 2-1 in round robin play, after beating Oklahoma Prep 69-58 Friday evening, dropping the CTC game, then coming up big with must-win over Estonia, who was also battling to get in the finals, after getting an emotional 69-67 come from behind win over Oklahoma Prep on Saturday afternoon.
