Chattahoochee Tech drops double-header at home to Cleveland State

Smyrna, GA - November 6, 2010 - Cleveland State rolled into town and left the Smyrna Community Center with two victories on Saturday night.

The CTC Women's Club team, coming off a tough 75-46 road loss at Chattanooga State on Thursday night, was looking to bounce back in its home opener against Cleveland State. After a competitive start, Cleveland State's defensive efforts began to take a toll on the Lady Eagles. CSCC built as much as a 14 point spread in the first half, before going in to the break up by 11.

In the second half, the CTC women fought valiantly. Though falling down by as many as 23, the Lady Eagles mounted a charge, cutting the score to seven at one point. But, the momentum couldn't carry as CSCC downed several threes to thwart the comeback bid.

The CTC women fell to 0-2 on the season, while CSCC moved to 2-0.

In what was a hard-fought game for both teams, the Cleveland State men mounted a resounding second half comeback to claim the 71-68 victory over the Golden Eagles

The first half saw a see-saw battle, with the lead changing hands numerous times. Cleveland State held a slim lead at the intermission, 39-37. In the second half, after a quick Chatt Tech score, CSCC answered with five points. Again, the lead changed hands several in what was becoming a very exciting contest.

Behind the the stepped up defensive efforts, which created transition, and the offensive fuel of Chris Deny, Chatt Tech began to establish some control. Deny's scoring, along several key buckets by Brannon Hopkins and Brian Collier, helped the Golden Eagles build a nine point cushion at 57-48. Conversely, mounting fouls by CTC, allowed Cleveland State to get in the bonus early.

Down the stretch, CSCC took forced several tough missed shots by CTC players, then capitalized on hustle baskets, along with clutch free throws, as a result of open court fouls by CTC defenders. The Golden Eagles had a hard time scoring in the half court setting. In the closing minute, Cleveland State got a crucial basket in the paint, to put them up 69-68. The Eagles could not answer on the ensuing possession, forcing a quick foul. Cleveland converted putting them up by three with 10 seconds remaining. The Eagles got the ball down the floor quickly, with plans to score a two quickly or get off a clean look from beyond the three point line. Clifton Cormier got trapped and could not find an open man and had to launch a hail mary from 35 feet that fell short of the rim.

The Chatt Tech men slipped to 2-1 overall on the early season and will return to the court on November 11, when Snead State comes to town. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm at Southern Polytechnic State University.
