Rome, GA - Daryl Dorsey and Mike Dean battled toe-to-toe last night in a high-scoring WBA matchup between Mayas-USA and the Floyd County Rage in Rome last night. Mayas pulled out a close 138-135 victory over the Rage. Dorsey dazzled the crowd with 48 points, including, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals, while Dean put up 34 points.
Mayas led most of the way, and had a 13-point cushion at the half. But, the lead was never comfortable for Mayas Head Coach Lionel Garrett. Garrett said, "we had a double-digit lead at halftime, but it didn't feel like it, because the Rage took the momentum into the locker room at the break and came back out with it going into the third quarter."
With Dean, the Rage made a push to climb back in the game. Many of the point for the Rage came at the freethrow line by repeatedly drawing fouls. Mayas fell behind mid way through the final stanza, but Dorsey regenerated his offense and Reo Logan came up with some big buckets. Mayas re-captured the lead and were able to hang on down the stretch.
Garrett went on to add, "Floyd County is a surprisingly good squad, who is going to give teams a tough time. Dean is so good and creates so many match up problems with his offensive skills. And, Latece Williams played as good as I've ever seen him play. We were lucky to get out of there with a win. It was a great game and Sean Perkins bent over double to accommodate us. "
To support Dorsey's offensive explosion, Logan finished with 26 points and eight rebounds and Brandon Hartley had 19 points. Bobby Brown, who is slowly working back from a sore knee, collected 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Deshawn Anderson had nine points, eight rebounds and BJ Puckett eight points.
Mayas played with out third-leading scorer Kareem Grant, who is away due to a death in his family.
Mayas-USA, who moved to 4-1 on the season, is back in action Friday night at Gwinnett Ravia. Floyd County slips to 1-1 in the early going of the season. Tip off is set for 7:30pm at Berkmar High School in Gwinnett County. | | |
