Summer Hill moves to 4-0 on Season, after hard fought 83-67 win over Oxford...

Summer Hill wakes up to beat Emory of Oxford College 83-67, moves to 4-0…

Cartersville, GA – November 8, 2008 – For 20 minutes Saturday afternoon, Summer Hill had its hands full with Oxford College. After trailing at the half, the Blue Devils finally woke up and surpassed the Eagles to claim its fourth victory in as many games.

Oxford came out confident from the opening tip, even though the Devils were out to an early 5-0 lead. Oxford fought back with solid offensive execution to take the lead at 8-7 four minutes in. Over the next few minutes, Summer Hill looked to have gained control, forcing a couple of turnovers and scoring on the other end. Kevin Green came off the bench to down seven points in the stretch for the Devils. But, after building a nine-point cushion, Oxford began to get repeated dibble-drives to the basket from their guards, as well as, short turn around jumpers in the post. The Devils went cold as the Eagles efficiently worked their way into the lead and eventually going into the intermission up 37-33.

The Blue Devils came out on a mission in the second half. A renewed defensive focus began causing the Eagles to shoot errant shots. Brandon Harris and Darrell Waters took advantage, converting feeds from Summer Hill guards Courtney George and Darryl Williams. Williams, also got in the scoring act hitting two threes and Josh White and Richard Davis both got several penetration buckets, as SH re-took the lead for good. Oxford made several mini-runs, but after fouling out one of their post players, a chunk of their advantage was gone. With the offense unbalanced, the Eagles couldn't seem to connect on key perimeter shots to keep pace. Summer Hill pulled away late for a 16-point win that was really closer than the score indicated.

White paced the Summer Hill scoring with 16 points, while Waters finished with 15 points, 12 boards and three blocks. Harris showed his true form, dropping 14 points and grabbing a season high 10 rebounds and swiping four steals. Williams tallied all dozen of his points in the second half and also had four assists. Green had seven points, as Nagee Smith and Davis both finished with six points, George five and Jeff Hawkins two. Summer Hill Blue Squad squanders lead, loses to Ware Prep, 77-75...

Cartersville, GA - November 8, 2008 -- Last week the Summer Hill Blue squad dropped a two point decision to Ware Prep and looked to rebound this week in a re-match against the Raiders on Saturday evening. The Devils took an impressive nine-point lead into the half-time but couldn't hold on in the second stanze as Ware fought back to take the win down the stretch.

Summer Hill executed perfectly in the opening half, taking advantage of the re-turning Marcus Henderson in the post. The offense flowed around Henderson as he collected buckets in the lane and kicked passes out for easy buckets by Nagee Smith, Demetrius Metcalf and Roman Gilliam. The Men in Blue led by as many as 14 in the first half and though smaller their defense badgered Ware into missed jumpers. Ware trailed 43-34 at the break, with many of their points coming at the line once they reached the bonus.

In the second half, the Devils maintained their spread until about the eight minute mark, when Ware began to take advantage of mismatches. The briefly cut their deficit to six, which prompted a Blue Devil time out. Summer Hill responded with five straight points, including an and-1 for Henderson, pushing the lead back to double-digits. However, the zone defense Summer Hill employed began to leave Ware shooters open. Three treys got the Raiders back in the game quickly. The Men in Blue suddenly found themselves down by two with time ticking down. After a turnover and another three, Ware was up 74-69. Summer Hill turned it over yet again, but Jamie King got a steal and quickly buried a trey in the corner to cut it back to 74-72 with 40 ticks remaining. King created another immediate turnover, but couldn't convert the pass across the lane and turned it back over. This time Ware answered with a lay-in while drawing a foul. They hit the freethrow, making it 77-72. Summer Hill managed another bucket and freethrow in the waning seconds, but it was too late.

Henderson led all scorers with 21 points and also had 10 rebounds. Nagee Smith had 18, while Roman Gilliam both got 13 points and Metcalf 10. Full boxscore:

The blue squad slips to 0-2 to start the season, but will be back on the court to right the ship next Saturday at 8:30pm when they host Clayton State University's Club Team at JH Morgan Gym.
